Penny Chase and Jane Doan were my teachers. My mother writes one of the parent reflections in their book. I have gone on to teach through the Teach for America program in the South Bronx. I teach 7th and 8th grade in a large public middle school with extremely low performance scores and high rates of poverty. As I finish my graduate courses and complete my own teacher research, I’ve read articles and text book chapters which refer to the work of Penny and Jane. What I’ve realized is that their work, their philosophy of education, their way of thinking about children as learners APPLIES to us all. I have used the differentiated, community-oriented approach in a large urban middle school and found the results and the possibilities just as amazing, if not more, than the small rural elementary school where Penny and Jane built their classrooms.
